The problem is, the interface is poor and, most annoyingly, there is no way to tune in to a specific frequency in the current version.

If your antenna does not pick up a channel at all, you need to adjust it and run a channel scan, which takes me 5 or 6 minutes, all over again. Using Windows Media Center addressed this issue quite nicely, and the product is very compatible with it. I also figured out how to do what I wanted with the software, Aver MediaCenter 3D, after playing with it enough.

The functionality, though, of the hardware is superb. I also got good results with old-fashioned rabbit ears and a UHF loop that I had laying around in my basement. Note that good antennas take up a lot of space. If you're looking to use this product, or any other TV tuner, indoors, and have VHF channels that you want to receive, the chances are that you will have to either use a good indoor antenna or run a cable from your roof antenna.

FM radio tuning, with good VHF rabbit ears, works quite well. Note that despite the product description, this is a one-tuner product and for most purposes you will only be able to watch or record one channel at a time if you have only bought one of these products.

It is possible to watch two subchannels on the same channel at the same time using the included software, but I seldom use that feature. If being able to watch and record two channels at the same time is important to you, a "dual-tuner" product is best. As far as I can tell, the advantage of this product compared to dual-tuner products is that in addition to a lower cost, setup is very easy with this product, with no need to either install an accessory inside your computer or to spend a lot of time configuring it.

Additionally, this product has an FM radio feature, while most dual-tuner products do not. The core hardware in the USB tuner stick works pretty solidly, and I recommend it. I have been running it on Windows 8 with no issues. In fact, when I upgraded to Windows 8.

I had no issues running it under Windows 7, previously. I get more than 23 channels using an external, indoor antenna and am pretty satisfied. I had predicated my decision to buy this TV tuner on the product description, which clearly states "Watch and Record two channels at the same time. If you try to change the channel you're currently recording, a message will pop up saying.

If you plan on watching one channel while recording another, keep looking. The first spotlighted review on the product page will corroborate this error.

I'm surprised most of the other reviews omit mentioning this. I'm using the unit on the version of XP that doesn't come with Windows Media Center, so I'm stuck with the included software. Before I get any flak -- yeah, yeah, I know it's an obsolete OS, and I'm in the process of moving my data over to another hard drive with Windows 7 installed.

Reportedly, WMC works very well with this unit. The included software is riddled with problems, the most serious of which is the BSOD. For the uninitiated, BSOD occurs when Windows crashes and the computer needs to be rebooted -- you lose all of your unsaved changes in all of your programs. The Avermedia software is infuriatingly sluggish.

I'm using a 3. The user interface is unbelievably bad. You can't preset channels and the navigation is laborious and confusing. Timeshift doesn't work, period. The included software is a joke! Is there any redeeming quality to this product?

My beef is not so much with the product listing as with the software. Errors do occur in product listings, and I can overlook that. But I have a hard time getting over how appallingly bad the software is in all respects -- from the UI to the functionality. Forethought in the design of the UI is patently absent, and it seems the software has been rolled out without having undergone even cursory testing.

Manufacturers need to know that it's inexcusable when any part of their product fails to deliver -- hence the low 2-star rating on this product. I will be testing this product on Windows Media Center and reporting back. Initially, I ran into a few glitches when the AVerMedia software crashed more than once. However, I persisted; and, I did manage to get the device running. The picture was excellent; and, the video was very smooth. At first, I did notice that the AVerMedia software didn't seem to be saving any of the channels which it had scanned.

I soon discovered why. The program had stopped working; and, Windows 7 had to close it down in other words, the program had crashed. However, once I performed the channel scan and then exited the program normally by clicking on the "X" in the upper right corner , the software did successfully save the channels saving me the trouble of having to re-scan them again.

Windows Media Center is far more reliable than the bug-ridden AVerMedia software, which frequently crashes.

Windows Media Center also includes additional features, such as a program guide. Windows Media Center comes pre-installed on many computers using the Windows 7 operating system. In the future, I will attempt to use the included antenna. During the winter months, I often have to sit inside my car and wait for the engine to warm up. When the weather is particularly cold, this can be a very long and boring process.

It will be nice to be able to use this device with my laptop computer to watch television from inside my car as the engine warms up. I did read other reviews in which people complained that they were unable to watch more than one channel at once. In other words, if you wish to watch more than one channel at once, the software will allow this, provided that you are running more than one piece of tuner hardware on your computer. I cannot give it five stars because of the glitches with the AVerMedia software.

However, the device performs a very unique function which will give my laptop computer an added capability. I give five stars to the USB tuner but only three stars to the included software. First fault i noticed is i cant use it with windows media center because that does not come with Windows 10 anymore. Not exactly a fault of the unit but the included program could use more features and optimization for windows After reading the information in the included manual i searched the company website for the listed accessories because i was very interested in the composite cables to connect other devices.

The site is very difficult to navigate, there is not "quick links" to the accessories from the product page or even here on the amazon one i ordered this from. I found one in there tv tuner category that sounded correct. It was a cable for a TV tuner Hybrid version and this being the hybrid Q sounds logical. So after waiting a few weeks i get the cable and find it does not fit my unit. I wont be sending them another dime till i get a direct link to the right cable.

Now if your still with me don't let these issues stop you from getting one i have been very impressed otherwise with the quality and performance of this unit. You can run 3 aerial shows at once! I'd love to see this function applied to other connections so i could have my cable tv on one of the three screens and my AV cable device on the second one if i ever get one..

Never got the missing cable, but otherwise still a useful device. Only negative is the heat the unit generates running I use a small extension cable to move it away from the computer which makes me worry about longevity if used constantly. Otherwise it's a great emergency TV option. It works! I wanted a way to record over the air television programs to my computer and this does a great job of that.

Why four stars instead of 5? Two reasons - First, because the program guide contained in the included software doesn't show more than a few stations. There is a link to an on line guide that will allow you to view your local listings, but then instead of just clicking on the show you want to record to schedule a recording, you have to manually enter it.

When you do it that way you have to name it, indicate the duration of the recording, and select the channel, as well as the frequency of the recording be it once or weekly. The 2nd reason is because after exporting my settings to a file on my computer, later when I went to import them it failed.

It may be because of some problem within Windows 8. I have a Roku connected to each of 3 televisions in our home. I have installed viewing software on my computer from Plex. Then I added the Plex channel to the list of channels that I want to view via Roku.

Besides the streaming channels like Hulu and Netflix, with Plex you can literally view any video you download or play any mp3 file, or even view photos that are on your computer once you set it all up. What I have done is to configure the Avermedia software to put my selected television shows in a folder I have set up in Plex so I can view it from any of the 3 rooms with the Roku's attached to our televisions. I could also view the recorded shows from the computer where the device is plugged into as well.

The recordings are high definition and look just as they do when aired. Viewing through Roku I can fast forward through commercials. This sure beats the expensive alternatives like Tivo or cable or satellite for local tv broadcasts.

Again, the only thing I wish for is that the built in programming guide include all of my local channels instead of just a handful. I'm not sure why they don't all show up in the guide.

I am running Windows 8. For the amount of money involved this is a great, albeit not perfect, way to record over the air television shows for viewing later. I'm using this on a 13" Retina MacBook Pro. I used Parallels and it seems to work fine. However, the product does run quite hot.
